Joseph Giunta (1911-2001)
An impressive cultural heritage
With his family's origins rooted in Sicily, Canadian Joseph Giunta was born in Montreal in 1911 and died in 2001.
Giunta studied the arts at the Monument National and at the Montreal School of Fine Arts. In the early 1930s, he began exhibiting his work, which was primarily traditional in style; portraits, still life and landscapes.
Almost three decades later, in 1958, he turned his attention to abstract art after which point in time he considered himself primarily as a Canadian abstract artist. His paintings henceforth are characterized by the use of dense textures, sweeping strokes, and intense and vibrant tones.

The fruits of his labour received considerable critical acclaim and met with significant commercial success over the subsequent years. During the 1970s, Giunta embarked upon a more personal voyage of discovery, which led to the creation of a series of mixed media collages, assemblages and pieces quite distinctive from his earlier work and marked by their unique plastic quality. In fact, it was at that point in time that the mixed media artist honed the most innovative and accomplished elements of his art.
Throughout his lifetime his work progressed through 4 major periods and styles:
Figuration  (1931-1958)
Gestural Abstraction - Abstract Art
Geometric and Baroque Constructions (1971-1989)
Mixed Media Collage Art (1974-2001)
